BRHS ALUM IN THE NEWS
ABRAHAM BENRUBI, portrays Ben, the local bar owner, in the fictional town of Elmo I the new ABC series, Men I Trees. Benrubie played Jerry for years in the tv show ER and, when in Indy a few years ago, was a Ripples judge. His cousin, also a BRHS Alum, TED MILLER is co-owner (with Benrubi) in Broad Ripple’s Brugge Brasserie.

News about two more recent and not-at-all famous BR graduates LAURA McCABE has headed to LA to try her luck in theatre. Laura spent a year in Chicago, furthering her theatre education before heading west.

KATHERINE VAN WYK will perform in this years’ Yuletide as a tap dancing Santa.

YEARBOOK & PICTURE INFO-including seniors!
Deanna Tratensek is the Student Publications Advisor. She has an ALL NEW staff this year so be patient and consider offering YOUR help! This will clarify some questions from PTA meeting. MORE INFO will follow next month.

Underclass (not Seniors) Picture Day is THIS FRI., SEPT 15.
Photo order forms were distributed to all 2nd period teachers 9/12 and is to be given to students 9/13. If you are ordering photos, payment is due FRI., however, if your student forgets their form & payment, or if you decide to place an order after photo day, I will provide a phone number to call the studio direct. ALL students are required to have their photo taken, but are NOT required to buy anything.

ALL yearbook pictures must be taken by Prestige Photo. Seniors have 2 options: a day in Dec. for seniors to have a (yearbook) headshot (no other poses) taken AT school for a $15 sitting fee. You may go to another studio for the Senior pictures. You may also make an appointment to go to Prestige's studio for the headshot ($15) or the senior photo package. If you buy a package from them, the $15 fee will come off the total price. The $15 sitting fee still applies and students will be asked to sign up for this opportunity closer to the photo date. Payment is due at time of sitting.

YEARBOOK
We are planning to produce a hardcover book and are finalizing details. Additional information will be available at the October meeting.

We heard many complaints about the 05-06 Yearbook CD. We produced the CD only because we did not meet our minimum sales number to publish (150 books to meet minimum/52 sold), and had no way to cover the entire expense of publishing the books through the yearbook fund (several thousand dollars). There were many opportunities at school and via email last year for students to purchase the yearbook. Even with students putting the book together, printing costs (paper, black/white versus color) and binding are expensive. We tried to find the most economical company/version of book to offer. The CDs were very cost effective and a way to
record as many memories as possible. Student Publications are sales driven and without strong sales, we must have a back-up plan.

IPS RENEWAL INVITATION
Our first meeting of the 2006-07 school year is this Saturday, September 16th from 11am to noon at the Harrison Center for the Arts, 1501 N. Delaware .

Dr. Jane Kendrick, Assistant Superintendent for High Schools, will be our guest speaker. As we are all aware of the problems facing our high schools, this is an opportunity to hear what is already happening, as well as other changes that are in the planning stages. We will also be discussing the third phase of the IPS building renovations. The Renewal Team has been asked to take a leadership role in this process, and we will need everyone’s support in this endeavor. This will be a very busy year for the Renewal Team and we hope to see all of you at this meeting so everyone can be informed!

CIRCLE CITY CLASSIC Your help is needed!
During last year's Circle City Classic and this year's Indiana Black Expo over 10 area church congregations participated in the Faith Based Patrol effort. Groups of four and five walked with IPD to patrol the streets and help provide a community atmosphere in downtown. We are
eager to help provide the same safe environment during the 2006 Circle City Classic on October 7.

This event draws thousands of people from across the nation, and while there is seldom a problem at the actual venue, police are often stretched too thin to manage pedestrian and vehicular traffic as hundreds of young people come downtown to cruise. In order to accomplish the Faith Based Patrol this year we need your help. We are asking you to identify volunteers or parents (male or female) who can help patrol downtown Indianapolis during three-hour increments:

Saturday October 7th 9 PM - 12 AM and 12 AM - 3 AM

Volunteers will park at the Indianapolis Urban League and be transported into downtown by bus with a police escort. There will be refreshments located in the IMCOPS van behind the Hyatt during the evenings for volunteers.

The next training meeting will be held at IPD East District Headquarters, 3120 E. 30th Street (Washington Park) Thursday, September 21st at 7:00 PM. If you are available to help patrol OUR streets please attend this meeting/training.

A parent asked about the Peyback Classic. Per our athletic director, Coach Hannan, IPS was uninvited to the Classic several years ago.

We need ATHLETIC PARENTS to step up and help with football concessions for the following games – especially the Chatard games- Chatard is a BIG money maker (we emptied 3 refrigerated units by halftime!)... Nine people would not be too many if that gives you an idea of their purchasing power. Diane wants to attend BR away games to watch her senior son play. Let’s help her out!

IndyFringe UPDATE! The BRHS Theatre Program will be presenting Left of Center at this year's IndyFringe Festival. The play was written and directed by Eva d'Ambrosio, class of '06, and stars many current (and a couple of former) BRHS theatre students. The play will be presented on Sunday, August 27, at 8:00 pm; Thursday, August 31, at 6:30 pm; and Saturday,
September 2, at Noon. All performances will be at the ComedySportz Club on Mass Ave. Admission is $13.00 - $10.00 for the play and $3.00 for the Fringe pass required for admission to any Fringe event. Hope to see you there!

GOVERNOR's INSight 4 INShape. Requirements - sophomore, junior or senior with 95% attendance, 2.5 gpa, must be involved with a minimum of one other after school activity and have 3 student and 3 teacher recommendations.

ISTEP/GQE Sept 19-21. ISTEP is for 9th graders; GQE is for 10th graders and any juniors/seniors who did not pass one or both sections of GQE in the past.

Remember to recycle your mails, newspaper and magazines in the bin in the front of the school. It's picked up monthly and proceeds are divided amongst the small schools. Support your school, help the environment and get rid of your recyclables!

Current enrollment is about 1,160 kids. Hoping to get another 280 to get our current staffing. We have an average of 30 students to 1 teacher ratio.

Athletic Booster Club still looking for parents - ESPECIALLY ATHLETES AND THEIR PARENTS - to help work concessions. It was a busy, hectic night Fri. against Chatard - but we love taking their money!!

Homecoming and Senior Night is Sept 29

YES Lunch is now $1.75. A yellow flyer was handed out to the students - ASK THEM!

AVID is a new program. Each school nominated 10 sophomores who would benefit from this. Parents were invited to an information session and opportunity to sign up their kid. Meets once a day and helps the B/C or C student achieve higher grades. If you have a sophomore you think
would benefit from some extra guidance / motivation, email and we'll get your name to the appropriate person and see if there are still openings.

Everyone should have received connect ed messages from our principal Mr Allen and our superintendent, Dr White, asking for a MALE TO BRING STUDENTS TO SCHOOL THE FIRST DAY... Let’s show the kids -and school - support!

Come out and support the players, school and athletic staff at Friday’s football game against Chatard. Chatard fills their side of the stadium to overflowing. Let’s show them we can do the same!

Speaking of football, we still need help with home football games, Chatard games (they rent our field - and these are big money maker nights), and the Indiana Speed games (they also rent our field). See list below and help out our quarterback’s mom - Diane ought to get to watch Mark in action, not have to be in the concession stand! an informal gathering of people at Monument Circle to celebrate the beginning of the new IPS school year. Last year we doubled the number of folks who had gathered together in 2004. Originally everyone bought ice cream from the shop on the Circle, but last year some folks opted
for Starbucks. Regardless of the treat, it is definitely a fun way to start the school year with friends, both new and old! Every year we would like to see this gathering grow - symbolizing the renewal movement we hope to see ignited in IPS. It would be great to have many of you

The only ones that have signed up are those that attended the last meeting.

Therefore, I will need a head count on Monday by 12:00 Noon for the chicken order.

Remember it starts at 6:00PM and this is a very important meeting as Officers will be elected and this will be the last meeting of the year.

GRADUATION
Each graduate will receive EIGHT tickets to graduation at the time they receive their CAP & GOWN.

BRHS STAFF RETIREMENTS:
Mr Wilson (math), Mrs Moulton, Mrs Cumberlander, Col. Wildemood (JROTC)... if you know them, consider sending a note to school thanking them for their years of service.

PRINCIPAL/REIBERG:
Mr Papeshs’ last day June 1; Reports downtown to be (1 of 3) Director of Middle Schools, mid June. New Principal Greg Allen. Mrs Bogard will be going to Tech as Principal.

STAFF CHANGES:
Teachers have been notified whether they are RIF (reduction in force: no contract with IPS) or Displaced (may have job but may not be at same school). Could not reduce Math or Science, chose not to reduce Social Studies and English because of testing... Took us down to reducing electives by 29 staff members. 14 were RIF’d, 15 displaced.

We are down to (had 5) 3 foreign language teachers + 1 Hebrew class; (5) 3 PE, 1 Art, (2) 1 Theatre, 1 family/consumer science, (5) 3 music: band, orchestra, choral (only will offer choir 1 & 2), (4) 3 counselors and (2) 1 dean. We offer 4 AP classes: physics, calculus, biology and
english.

Electives will be opened across small schools; counselors will have to divide up and “cross” small schools.

SPORTS:
Dr White is giving sports a 1 year reprieve; each team will be evaluated based on fielding minimum required players (i.e., golf requires 5) AND that the larger sports like football, basketball, soccer, track, softball, baseball, volleyball, ?? will have to field Freshman, Jr Varsity AND Varsity teams. We discussed private schools “recruiting” players from middle schools. It is against IHSAA rules for a public school to allow a private school coach in the building to talk to
individual players. A coach can talk to a team as a whole with coaches permission. Coaches are not to approach individuals and offer money. IHSAA will only investigate if a parent files a complaint, not a school.

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS:
Janet Meyer clarified the process. Counselors usually choose 4 students, looking first for students whose parents have been involved in pta/school activities AND who have not received any other scholarships. With new counselors this year process was disrupted. PTA is awarding two scholarships.

Other:
INDYGO is offering a summer youth BUS PASS... $25 unlimited rides for 3 months, June 1-Aug 31, valid for youth 18 and younger (must show student id). This is a savings of $50! Available in person at IndyGo Customer Service at City Market or www.IndyGo.net or 635-3344.

BRHS Theatre Magnet presents RECKLESS - this Fri Apr 21 and Sat. Apr 22 at 7 pm in our NEW Auditorium. Support the IPS renovations - support your school - support your students!

Theatre Magnet will sell flowers at Reckless AND Ripples (May 5 & 6) for your favorite performer - don't forget those kids working behind the scenes - set, lights, sound, and costumes!

Did you know the Theatre Magnet and Athletics have Booster Clubs? Now there's school spirit! Theatre hosts a welcome each fall for new students and parents as well as a couple social gatherings each year and raise money to help enhance the Theatre Magnet - most notably, students have gone to Chicago, New York City and TWICE to Scotland to perform in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Athletics help with the two sport banquets and run the concession stands during football and basketball.

Parents could form other booster clubs - individual small school PTA's, specific booster clubs... anyone interested?

Friday, April 28th is Fringe Friday at Easley Winery. Broad Ripple students WILL BROWN and TAD TOBEY will perform Dead Cat for Huey. Come support Indy arts AND BRHS theatre students!

Sorry for the last minute news: COLLEGE FAIR at GLENDALE MALL -TUES APR 18 (Glendale Mall is on northeast side - about 62nd north on Keystone Ave.) This is a great opportunity for sophomores and juniors to start checking out schools, what they offer - might give them not only some ideas - but motivate them if they see talk to some colleges and see what they are looking for in a student. College app deadlines (usually around December of senior year) come much faster than you think.

The Century Council has launched a new initiative to help parents remind their kids to have a safe prom by sending them a text message reminder not to drink on prom night. Visit a special web site, www.centurycouncil.org/promtext - parents and/or teens, themselves, can sign up to have a safe prom text message sent free on prom night to the cell phone number they choose. An email confirmation message will be sent out to confirm that the text message was sent.

Dear Dr. White,
I attended the IPS board meeting last December and more recently the March meeting at Broad Ripple High School regarding changes to the athletic program. My daughter, Eva, is a senior at Broad Ripple High School. We are middle class and had the means to send her to North Central, Chatard or Brebeuf. We chose Broad Ripple because it was our neighborhood school offering both the Theatre and Humanities magnets as a double major. As important as academics in deciding which school to attend was the opportunity for Eva to participate in athletic programs. Not just to make the team, but to be a contributor and competitor. She had participated in both soccer and track previously and also picked up cross country as a new sport. That experience later gave her the confidence to run the 500 Mini-marathon. Because of the smaller size of the BRHS, not only did she make teams, she was able to be a starter and a co-captain. Had she attended a larger school this most likely would not have been the case. And yes, most of her sport seasons were losing seasons. And yes, often they were pummeled by larger schools with better financed and organized sport programs. But winning the games isn't the only point. I know no one wants to hear that in our sports crazed society. My daughter made friends outside of her classes, learned to incorporate exercise into her busy schedule, reduced the stresses of high school, and learned how to both win and lose. I think being a part of team sports helped her achieve academic excellence. I think academics without athletics is unbalanced. And to put athletics before academics is borderline negligence for a school system. To make a child choose sports over academics is absurd. At a time when kids are getting fatter and fatter by the day, the
last thing we need to do is reduce the opportunities to participate in sports.

I was disappointed to see how few questions were asked by some of the school board members at last December’s presentation of this proposal. My concern is the board rubber-stamping this change as a way to impress the new superintendent. However, I was relieved to see most members in attendance at the high school meeting. This meeting allowed parents and
students to voice their opinions. There was heckling of parents who opposed the changes and didn’t want to spend more money for fewer programs. I later found out this heckling was done by the BRHS football coaching staff, all of whom are in favor of the sports consolidation.
What I saw was a clash of two philosophies. One of parents wanting their child to have the option to participate in a sport without having it as the mainstay of their high school career. As Superintendent you have made your philosophy known with comments such as in, “winning is
everything” and “sports were my ticket out” and “life is full of tough choices”. You quizzed an opposing student regarding Manifest Destiny as argument for change. I was far more concerned that the student had no idea of what this controversial philosophy entailed. A philosophy which
utilized enslavement and genocide is not an appropriate argument. I am so glad my daughter is a senior and will not have to deal with the possible effects of this proposal. I realize, only by chance, that Broad Ripple will still have the sports in which she participated. But I feel bad for the kids that won't be so lucky. I think the sports program definitely needs to be improved. The development of lower school programs and the feeder system is a great idea. But, reducing availability of sports coupled with previous academic reductions (no newspaper, no speech team, faculty cuts) makes Broad Ripple less of a school for the students. So, if I had to make Eva’s high school decision today, then I would have no choice but to be a part of the middle class flight from
IPS.

Stage1 Boosters Meeting Minutes

Those in attendance at the meeting called to order at 7:12PM included Kim Williams, Mary Jane Brown, Tracy L. Cork, Roseann Spisak, Phyllis Dowe, Sylvia Grider, Carol d’Ambrosia, Debby Brown, Sheila, John, Derek & Sean Kaellner, and Regina Sinclair.

Mary Jane Brown started the meeting with a welcome and stated the main duty of this meeting was to vote to have elections; however, there are not enough members in attendance to hold the election so they will be held in May at the Summer Social.

It was suggested at the Board meeting that there be a meeting during the middle of the summer for both the past officers and the new officers to assist with next year’s planning. Eva d’Ambrosia motioned elections be at the next meeting, it was seconded by RoseAnn Spisak and passed unanimously. It was stated that two parents for each officer position help lighten the load and works out well as different grade parents to train on-the-job for the next year. It was suggested we send out a letter asking for volunteers for positions to keep as co-chair. It will also be good to let them know about the pitch-in.

Booster parent Kaellner asked about having magnet the program next year, and it was explained that this is standard operating procedure from past years. It just goes to show how important this club is to keeping the program and enabled the details to make productions a success and a great experience in this program.

It was mentioned for both parents and students need to update Scotland fundraising hour’s participation. Mr. Owens stated he mailed packets out on April 7th instead of the intended March 31st, with a newsletter.

Fundraising opportunities sign-up sheet is available, please sign up. We are going to try to thwart the outside vendors from selling flowers. We will also be selling water. Mrs. DeBruicker will be contacted by Carol d’Ambrosia regarding a slip or note saying to purchase inside the building from the Theatre Boosters. Students will be needed to volunteer for the water sales. Regina will also send out an email asking for volunteers.

Reckless will be April 21st and 22nd at 7:00PM, there is an order form for presale or advance tickets. Previous years Booster Club did season tickets and it helped with up front costs. They will be at “will call” with their name on a list. Long Saturday will be this weekend, April 15th, crew from 9AM to 9PM, and we will not be providing pizza. It was suggested that the Broad Ripple Gazette be allowed to take pictures previous to the show to help advertise. The Star has been doing articles by neighborhood areas featuring school programs, maybe we can get them involved. Juli Van Wyk will probably put in the PTA newsletter.

There are two sessions so you could, in theory, get your whole year done in one summer (June 6-July18)... Have your student check with their counselor.

Did you see the Indpls Star insert about the Indpls Star Indiana Academic All Stars? 249 seniors nominated; 40 selected and one was our own, EVA D’AMBROSIO! Eva is also a National Merit Scholarship winner AND an IU Wells Scholar (all expenses paid, all 4 years!). Congratulations Eva! (Eva’s mom wants you to know she’s already written Dr White a letter stating that if these teacher cuts and sports cuts had gone into effect earlier, Eva would never have attended Broad Ripple.) In defense of IPS management, it’s the legislature that has created the $24 million shortfall requiring immense staffing cuts so consider that when its’ election time. You done us proud Eva!

This was the opening statement of the paragraph. The rest contained a little history of the school.

There were over 7000 entrants and 60 finalists---four out of the sixty. We had the most finalists with New Castle having three recipients after us. Congratulations from the staff and administration!!!!

VINICIO SANCHEZ, a 2005 BRHS art magnet graduate, is attending IUPUI in bio-medical engineering. He called to invite me to attend the Engineering and Technology Honors banquet with him because he is receiving an award. He is carrying a 3.4 GPA and has had scholarships to pay all his tuition this past year. This is all the more impressive because Vinicio spoke almost no English when he came to BRHS in the fall of 2002. I'd like to thank all those on the staff who helped make this dream a reality for Vinicio.

Submitted by Diane Carter, EMILY TODD has been in Nicaragua the last 2+ years working with a Jesuit program in the slums of Managua. (She works with male gang members and helps to organize the women to march on city hall.) She loves the work and the people. She'll starts a graduate program in the fall of 07.

Julie TODD will be a senior at Wooster next year and been picked to be one of the
student Residence Hall Directors. Most RDs are adults or post grads!

KATIE EYNON-ORR, class of about‘92 has her own dental practice on the northeast side (82nd & Statesman). She lives in the Meridian Kessler neighborhood and is expecting her first child in May. If you need a dentist, here’s your chance!

Mr Papesh's last day will be June 30th. Downtown is asking for parent volaunteers to sit on the interview team for our new principal, Wed, April 12, 4:30-possibly 9/10 pm, Educ. Service Ctr, 120 E Walnut. Call Mr Papesh at 693-5708 to volunteer. Many parents expressed the opinion
that since Dr White didn't want our opinion on reassigning Mr Papesh, why would he now want our input on a new principal. A petition was sent downtown signed by all but ONE staff person requesting that Mr Papesh remain in place. I have a petition ready to mail with 90 parent
signatures gathered via email and the Winter Sport Banquet. At this point if you haven't signed but want your opinion heard, you will have to email Dr White and the board at parksc@ips.k12.in.us and whiteeg@ips.k12.in.us

Reminder for Volunteers for this weekend’s Musical Little Shop of Horrors concessions of flowers, candy and water included for Friday – Kim Williams, Mary Jane Brown, and Matt Dowden; Saturday – Debbie Brown, Tracy Cork and Lela Livingston.

Mary Jane Brown started the meeting with a welcome and stated the main duty of this meeting was to vote to change the bylaws to have elections in the Spring previous to the following school year. Regina Sinclair motioned for this change; it was seconded by Nancy Craig, and passed unanimously. This was necessary due to most of the officers had Seniors this year and would not be available for next year’s positions.

Mary Jane read aloud the letter that was sent home via the students and via email stating the consequences and necessity for this change. It was stated how very important it was that we get officers established for the current officers to be able to assist in the transition. Each position duties were explained by the current officers and how the burden could be easier if it was shared. It was explained that the Social situation seemed our best opportunity to state the necessity and urgency of having a slate of officers. A count was conducted of parents attending and there were 5 Freshman parents, 5 Sophomore parents, and 3 Junior parents. Those parents that stated they would consider the positions for voting next month included:

Mrs. Reiberg asked for a round of applause for those officers that are currently serving.

PTA passed a resolution to forward to the School Board and Dr White “We, the PTA of Broad Ripple High School do hereby encourage the Board of IPS to endorse the Elementary and Middle School Athletic Proposal to strengthen athletics at those levels, believing THAT is the place to
start, to improve athletic competition at the high school level. At the same time, we are unanimous in our opposition to eliminating ANY athletic team from ANY IPS high school.”

The Executive Board is considering the dissolution of the Stage1 Rocket Boosters Club due to lack of participation. At the March meeting we will be presenting an amendment to move elections to the Spring instead of at the first meeting in the new school year. If we don’t have a slate of officers for the upcoming school year, we will be forced to dissolve the club.
Key issues that will be neglected should the club be dissolved include: Lack of financial assistance which will mean a cutback of workshops and field trips. Lack of organization activities for productions leaving the teachers the added responsibility of getting volunteers to sell tickets, and getting assistance with set builds. Equipment purchases like the lights and sound provided for the Black Box Theatre. Refreshments/Concessions at productions, and on Long Saturday Social. Interaction of both parents and students.
All parents and students are requested to attend the Spring Social scheduled for March 14th in the school cafeteria at 6:00PM. The club will again provide the meat entrée of Fried Chicken. You will need to contact Regina Sinclair, club secretary with the information of how many in your family plan to attend so that we will have enough chicken and what you will bring; such as a side dish, dessert, paper products, or soda pop with ice.

Thanks to the 200 or so parents and students who attended the Sports Magnet Meeting with Dr White. At a time when IPS is cutting $24million from the budget - something near 300 teachers - Dr White proposes increasing the athletic budget by a million (to enhance 5th-8th grade sports) and reducing the number of teams in each school. Currently, BRHS fields 19 teams. It is proposed that in 07-08, BRHS will only have 6 teams. We know we'll get some back, probably a maximum of 3. It was heartening to see the number of students who came to speak against this when you consider that it is only this years' freshman who will suffer from the cuts.

Dr White needs to know that we care about ACADEMICS first, and ATHLETICS also. Dr White says Academics come first, but cutting teachers doesn't seem like any way to make that happen. He feels we lose students to private and township schools because our teams are not competitive.
That may be true, but I believe the overriding decision is that there are MORE academic options/offerings and the athletics is a perk. Improve academics and discipline in IPS and parents will stay. THEN improve the athletic program.

IPS Sport Magnet and TITLE IX

The following is my personal feeling on the IPS Sport Magnet program and not one necessarily of the Stage 1 Boosters or PTA.

The IPS Sport Magnet proposal is illegal.

The plan of eliminating certain sports so that it causes an unequal balance between boy's sports and girl's sport is illegal based on the "TITLE IX, Education Amendments of 1972".

The TITLE IX, was design to make sure girls had the same opportunity, at governmentally funded schools, to participate in sports. When IPS takes away "girls" sports, IPS will be violating the TITLE IX law.

Please take the time to educate yourself about TITLE IX, it may be the only way to save sports at Broad Ripple, and other IPS schools.

The following is information on the proposed IPS Sports Magnet program. I know this is not really Theather, but it is student related. My child is in both theather and sports, which one will she have to be force to choice?

MINUTES OF BRHS PTA MEETING

Coach Hannan was asked to address the Sports Magnet Proposal BR currently offers basketball, cross country, football, soccer, tennis, track, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, golf, softball and swimming. It is proposed that VOLLEYBALL, WRESTLING, BASEBALL, GOLF, SOFTBALL and SWIMMING (8 teams) be eliminated at BRHS.

Dr White feels strongly that we must be more competitive to attract and keep athletes in IPS and the only way to do that is to reduce the number of schools offering the program. If you would send your child to BRHS for the Humanities program, but your daughter wants to play basketball, volleyball and softball, you would have to choose... BRHS for basketball or, say, Tech, for all 3.

Choosing Tech does NOT guarantee you a spot on the team however. If you choose to go to Tech and don't make the team, you're stuck. If you transfer back to Broad Ripple, you cannotplay ANY sport for a year. You cannot switch schools for athletics. Reducing the number of schools offering a particular sport will make the competition to be on a team greater. Now you may have moved your child and they still don't get to play their sport.

Coach Hannan feels strongly that the purpose of athletics is not to win - it's a perk, a bonus. It's kids learning to work together toward a goal, to make friendships and teamwork and have a focus for their afternoons. To have fun. The highest percentage of kids playing athletics are "at risk kids - kids who probably wouldn't make a team that cuts based on skill alone. We have larger teams than many schools so that a student who WANTS to play, GETS to play. Our kids need MORE after school activities, not LESS. Even Dr White was involved in a study several years ago that found kids who are NOT involved in after school activities are more likely to get in trouble in the 3-6pm time frame.

Coach Hannan estimates that 170 athletic participants would be lost to this proposal (i.e., many of our girl basketball players also play volleyball and softball - two sports we'd lose... would those basketball girls stay here or choose to go to Tech where they could play all three (if they made the team, that is)? EVERY high school is slated to lose some sport... Tech would lose the least (3 sports: soccer, cross country and wrestling).

BR is one that loses the most - 6 sports (8 teams). Yet BR has the 2nd highest percent of enrollment (27.3%) participating in sports. It is estimated that 36% of our athletes will be affected by this proposal and have to choose academics over sports or sports over academics (again, with no promise they'll make the team at the sports school). Six BR teams: golf, softball, swimming, wrestling are the largest teams in IPS. Volleyball and baseball are the 2nd largest teams in IPS. BRHS has the 2nd highest percentage of boys playing sports (32.3%) and the highest percentage of girls playing (23.1%)

Girls will be affected more than boys based on the combination of sports our girls currently play.

BR has the 2nd highest GQE pass rate in IPS... 63.5% of our athletes have passed the GQE. Broad Ripple has actually been slowly increasing the number of students who participate in athletics. This is a good thing! Along with that, abilities have been improving. Think what fortitude it takes to play an IPS sport when there is so little school spirit - your kids have to REALLY WANT TO PLAY to play to empty stands.

Parents have got to become more involved, more supportive of their kids. We strive to teach the kids that you (the team) are only as strong as its' weakest link...work together, help each other.

Points to consider:
**THIS IS A DISTRICT ISSUE, not just what is happening at our school. Consider the student who wants to play more than one sport - but they are offered at different schools
**This plan could drive more families out of IPS.
**Parents will be forced to choose between the academic program that best suits their child and whether to let them play the sport they are interested in.
**Should the lack of sporting facilities be a factor in deciding which sport your school has? We don't have a pool or golf course yet our students consistently win IPSAC... (IPSAC=ips athletic competition)
**Childhood obesity is at an all time high. Schools and parents are supposed to be encouraging their child to be MORE active... If a school loses half their sport offerings a students options have been reduced.
**Students who participate in extra curriculars do BETTER in school. We should be offering MORE sports / teams not LESS
Limiting the athletic opportunities is not equitable.
**This decision was not based on funding cuts - in fact - this proposal will cost IPS another million dollars. We're losing staff - bigger classrooms, fewer class offerings, but increasing the cost of the athletic program. What message is that sending to our students?

The proposal came about partly because Dr White wants to make the athletic feeder system into high school better... wants to offer sports at the 5th and 6th grade level (private schools start as early as 3rd grade) and wants to increase the sport offerings at middle school. That is a good idea... but not at the cost of then reducing an 8th graders options on where to go to play that sport! Parents could become more involved at the elementary level and be volunteer coach / sport coordinators!

This may not affect YOUR child... but think of those kids who are sophomores and freshmen now... think of those kids in middle school hoping to go where their big brother or sister or cousin went. This is a community issue not just a "my kid" issue.

LET'S HAVE SO MANY PARENTS AND STUDENTS AND ALUMNI HERE ON MARCH 1st that we have to move the meeting from the auditorium to the gym.

If you speak, call or write letters, do not harp on Broad Ripple's loss... remember that every school is facing the same loss, to one degree or the other, as we are. The kid at Tech doesn't want to come here, any more than your student may want to go to Northwest or Arlington. Remember, calling this a magnet allows you to move whereas changing schools to play on a different team is not allowed (IHSAA rules)

If you live in BR's district and go to Tech to play volleyball -and don't make the team... you are stuck at Tech not playing or you can transfer back to BR and not play ANY sport there.

What can we do?
Parent record a message on Connect Ed?
Coach Hannan record a message on Connect Ed?
Coach Hannan address students on PA system, or at class meetings?
English lit classes write essays about importance of sports at the high school level?
Phone calls to Board
Email / Mail / Calls to Superintendent's office
Talk to Amos Brown... will he get involved?
Talk to area churches... surely they understand the need for more activities for their students, not less
Reach out to middle schools? They will be most affected by this
Contact Alumni? What did sports mean to you?
Letter to the Editor (Star and Recorder and BR Gazette)
Have parents come in at lunch mods to encourage students to sign petition and/or write letters to school board or letters to editor.

Parents of African American juniors and seniors - remember to check out those websites for college scholarships. My daughter pieced together another $3,000 in one time scholarships by searching the websites and filling out paperwork. Every little bit helps!

Sunday at 2PM.

If you do ticket sells, you will need to arrive 30-45 minutes early, and it would be good for concessions as well for selling before the show and then again during intermission. Food & drinks are not allowed in the new auditorium.

STAGE 1 BOOSTERS MEETING MINUTES

JANUARY 10, 2006

Those in attendance at the meeting called to order at 7:00PM included Nancy Craig, Kim, Karin, Kris & Karolyn Williams, Sylvia & Cortnee Grider, Tracy Cork, Kris Owens, Phyllis Dowe, Mary Jane & Will Brown, Sandy Reiberg, Carol & Eva d’Ambrosio, Roseann Spisak, Matt Dowden, Regina Sinclair, John, Sheila, Sean & Derek Kaellner.

Mary Jane Brown started the meeting with a welcome and turned over to Kris & Carol to recap the Holiday Tree Sales we sold approximately $1259.00 worth of trees, but paid $960.00 and with the 15 trees that remained we lost approximately $300-$500. This was noted as poor response from the students each selling a tree.

It was brought up that the Boosters may be better as a representation of the Thespian Society than the Theatre Magnet as a whole. Mr. Owens also supervises the Thespian society and they seem more inclined to participate, therefore Boosters would benefit those that want to be involved other than students just looking for an easy class. Majority of the members that attend meetings have students that are graduating and we are trying to anticipate for next year’s involvement. The Bylaws will need to be reviewed to see that aspect of the change. We are raising funds for 60 students, instead of a possible 10 to 12 that may be more dedicated. Mr. Owens sponsors in the Society now approximately 10 to 15 students. Dues are $21.00 for all four years of high school and show a financial commitment by the student; plus the Thespian society has volunteered to fund $11.00 of the dues so that the student is only paying $10.00. Our goal is not to eliminate the Boosters, but there is major concern about participation and we need to redefine the focus. Thespians are on a point system and freshmen are usually not eligible until 2nd semester. The Boosters just want to make people aware of the possibility of the change. It will make a smaller; better, easier to manage so much more as a small group.

We were unable to participate in the Indy Fringe Festival last year as the students just returned from Scotland. They are looking at four possible high schools to participate this year. We would have a 90 seat venue at Indy Sports on Massachusetts Avenue, and we will get the box office after our expenses are charged. The Fringe is even looking at the possibility of waiving the maximum $200 entry fee for the high schools. Four performances would net a good profit and this would be a fantastic fundraiser. Seniors will probably not be able to support this endeavor as they will be starting college so again this is a necessity to getting the underclassmen involved.

Mr. Owens offered to show the new auditorium to those interested after the meeting.

Windows are complete in the Theatre Classroom where the Black Box Theatre is located and Debut will be held.

Volunteer sign-up sheet was posted and it was noted that there would be a necessity for volunteers not only for Debut, but that there would be four performances of Raisin in the Sun. They are anticipating more ticket sells than normal as this is a very popular show, there will be two casts, and it will be in the new auditorium. Tech Saturday will be January 21st for Set Building from 9:00AM to 5:00PM, and then Debut will be that evening at 7:00PM. Long Saturday for Raisin In the Sun will be on Saturday, January 28th from 9:00AM to 9:00PM. There should not be any need for costumes, only props for this production. Students will need to Brown Bag as Pizza will not be provided.

Mrs. Reiberg has stated that there is not enough time to do the Fashion Show with back-to-back events already planned for the new auditorium of the Talent Show, Raisin In the Sun, musical Little Shop of Horrors, Reckless, and Ripples all in a four month period. She will not approve at this time and this event will have to be tabled until next year. It was a good fund raiser, the students pulled it together, and the entire school was involved and with a little more organization and more participation could be a huge event.

Reminder to Scotland participants that they have promised 75 volunteer hours and there is a tally sheet put together by Regina in which you and your student need to verify. Remember meeting hours are included for all those in the family that attends.

Since the Holiday Social was such a good turn out, we will repeat for the St. Patrick’s Day Holiday. The Boosters will again provide Chicken and this will be a pitch-in.

It was brought up that one of our fundraisers was to be seasonal photos during lunch mods, taking pictures with a Polaroid at a cost of 1 for $3 or 2 for $5. Ideals included New Year’s Celebration, Debut, Raisin In the Sun, and a $100.00 bill cut-out. It was decided to just utilize props, not necessarily backdrops or possibly just some Theatre Masks. Carol and Kim volunteered to be parent sponsors and help work on a backdrop with the students. This will need student volunteers to work during lunch mods and one parent to sponsor. Student volunteers included Cortnee, Will, Eva, and Karin. Lunch mods run from 10:30AM to 1:30 PM. The Junior Class last year made approximately $600 last Valentine’s Day. It is better if this is a week long event that will run January 30th thru February 3rd.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:09 PM. The next meeting will be on February 14th in the School Cafeteria at 7:00PM.

The Broad Ripple Boosters are offering $800.00 out of their general fund for any Scotland student willing to commit to 75 hours of service during next school year.

BRHS Magnet Variety Show & Dinner This Weekend

The BRHS Magnet Variety Show & Dinner is this weekend. Tickets are still available and walk-ins are welcome.

The dinner menu includes your choice of spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna with meat sauce, or stuffed shells with Alfredo sauce. Tea and coffee are included.

We look forward to seeing you at Milano Inn on Saturday June 11 at 7:00 p.m.

Our next Scotland and Booster Meeting will be on June 14th
at 6:00 pm at the IUPUI Service Center in Glendale Mall.

It is best to park at the back of the mall near the Kerasote Theater
and come in Entrance 3, walk down the hallway towards the center
of the mall.  The stairs/elevator is to your right (next to the India
clothing store).  The Service Center is at the foot of the stairs on
the right.  There will be signage in the center to direct you to
the room.

Hollywood Nights Prom

The Junior Class liaisons of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School would like the Drama Club of Broad Ripple High School to provide a minimum of six and a maximum of ten actors to serve as "paparazzi" along the red carpet at Hollywood Nights Prom from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 15th just inside the main corrider of The Grand Hall of Union Station in downtown Indianapolis.

We need 2-4 more students to join in on this opportunity. If you not involved with the Ripples Friday night, please let Mr. Owens know you want to join in.

This Friday marks the 1st Annual Spring Fashion Show. At 7 p.m. in the Auditorium, 50+ students will strut their stuff for the audience. Five sophomore Theatre students decided to hold the event as a fund raiser for the Booster Club. Thanks to Justine Major, Angela Miller-Nelson, Tiara Peoples, Tanei Livingston, and Easha Ennis for spearheading this project.

Join parents, teachers and students from around the state for a rally at the State House to show your support for public education!

WHY: To Support Public Education Funding

WHERE: Indiana State Capitol Building200 West Washington StreetIndianapolis, IN 46204

WHEN: Wednesday, March 30th - 11:30 a.m.

Legislators will address the assembly starting at 11:30 a.m.

Immediately after the rally we will march around the State Capitol.

Anyone attending is encouraged to bring signs or banners.

(PLEASE NOTE: signboards are not allowed to be attached to sticks)

Please join us to show that investing in our children is the most important thing Indiana can do.

Polar Bear Run & Walk

We need volunteers to help work the Polar Bear Run & Walk this weekend - Saturday February 26.

I would need everyone at the Indiana War Memorial 7:45 A.M.

Duties: It would be great if everyone could be flexible, but we really need help with Rest & Recovery and Course Directionals. Completion of the duties will be at 11:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M.

Volunteer Area:
Enter the main entrance on Michigan Street. Turn left when you enter the building and go toward the double doors (the MacArthur room). Once you reach the double doors, turn right and in that hallway you will see the Volunteer Check-in area.

What I Need:
I will need the names, ages, and t-shirt sizes of the people who would like to help.

Benefits:
Volunteers will recieve a free event t-shirt and free refreshments the morning of the event. They will also recieve a free meal coupon for Fazoli's (they will be at the event). Also, they can sign up to have a chance at winning prizes. Also, if we can get 10+ volunteers, you will recieve a donation from us!

Scotland - Fringe Festival

Each August, performing artists from all over the world gather in Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Festival includes over 15,300 different performances of music, dance, theatre and comedy during its three week run.

In the summer of 2005, we have the opportunity to take a completely new cast of students to perform in the Fringe. BR is one of 40 American high schools selected to share in this adventure, and still, the only Marion County high school to participate.

Our goal is to fund raise enough to send every qualified theatre student to the Festival. These students must meet academic, attendance, and theatre participation standards for the entire 2004-05 school year. The cost, around $4,300 per student, includes air and ground transportation, lodging, 2 meals/day, security, sightseeing/tours, and all fees involved with performing (lights, sound, rehearsals, and venue). They will depart for London in late July and return from Scotland mid August. While there, they will attend a workshop and performance at the Globe Theatre, enjoy a variety of attractions including guided tours, tour the Scottish countryside including Sterling Castle, and attend theatrical performances and, most importantly, PERFORM FOUR TIMES IN THE FESTIVAL. While at the Fringed it is their responsibility to distribute flyers to attract an audience, sell the tickets; chaperones will act as ushers. Their set must be portable and there are time limits to "put the show together".
